What form allows us to study
Precision in a compact form. A reduced number of sequences does not mean easy work.
An observation point
Do not go through the preparations too quickly just because the form is short. Choose a short sequence and compare two trials with the same criterion. The video is used to prepare a question for the course; the fix belongs to the dojo version.
Brevity does not remove depth
Wankan has a compact shape whose connections require sustained attention. Memorization can be quick while preparations remain difficult to explain. Identify the entry into the movement, the place of the hands and the action that follows each arrival. Variations between schools must be identified before a comparison. A complete repetition that is easy to count does not prove the quality of the organization. Working in segments helps retain detail without adding pauses that would arbitrarily change the rhythm conveyed.
Give time to preparations in a compact form
A short form can be crossed quickly while its preparations require precise study. Choose a segment and identify what organizes the movement before the visible action. Also observe what the second hand and the gaze are preparing. The complete repetition is easily remembered, but this familiarity does not prove that the connections have been mastered. Repeat a passage at a pace that allows you to see these relationships. kihon's work can shed light on a detail; its return in the kata makes it possible to verify that the correction serves the sequence.
