Heian Shodan

Heian Shodan study sheet: objectives, observations and links with other forms.

Reading: approximately 2 min

What form allows us to study

The gaze, the pivot and the arrival in position. Gedan-barai and oi-zuki provide a framework for coordinating the step and the arm. The shuto-uke ask to distinguish the organization in kokutsu-dachi.

An observation point

An arm completed before the end of the pivot can mask unstable support. Compare the work of both sides. Choose a short sequence and compare two trials with the same criterion. The video is used to prepare a question for the course; the fix belongs to the dojo version.

What the first form allows us to observe

Heian Shodan provides a framework for linking greeting, orientation, movement and technique. The actions known in kihon take here an order and a layout. The difficulty is not only finding the direction: you have to prepare the pivot without losing direction, then start again without unnecessary adjustment. The passages in kokutsu-dachi allow another organization of supports to be compared. The teacher sets the benchmarks for his version. A correction of the first displacement can then be verified on an analogous passage, without making all the sequences identical.

Relate the gaze to the change of direction

Recognize each change of direction before increasing speed. Study a pivot with arm preparation, then add the next step. This connection allows us to see if the reception really prepares the continuation or if it imposes a new adjustment. Compare the passages of gedan-barai and those of shuto-uke: the organization of the supports changes and must not be replaced by a single position. A rehearsal filmed from the front shows the directions; another view can shed light on the path of the foot. Keep a correction criterion common to both sides.
