Outfit, protection and maintenance: prepare your bag

Choose equipment suitable for the course, check it and keep it clean without confusing dojo equipment with the requirements of a tournament.

Reading: approximately 2 min

An outfit that allows you to move

For a trial session, ask the club what outfit is accepted. Soft clothing generally allows you to observe movements without making multiple purchases. For karategi, check the freedom of the shoulders, hips and knees. A sleeve that hinders the hand or pants that catch the foot complicates the exercise. The cut and fabric are chosen with the teacher, according to the practices of the group; the “competition” label does not guarantee that an outfit will be suitable for all classes.

Prepare your partner as much as you do

Before getting on the practice surface, remove jewelry and check for items likely to snag. Maintained nails and clean clothing contribute to respect for the partner. Protections do not make uncontrolled contact acceptable. Their presence, size and condition are checked before the requested exercise. Deteriorated or poorly adjusted protection must be reported. The requirements of a tournament can be read in its regulations; they cannot be inferred from a photo found online.

Maintain without damaging

Follow the washing label rather than a universal recipe: some fabrics shrink or do not tolerate high temperatures. Take damp items out of the bag after the session and let them dry before storing. Check seams, cords and closures. Identify personal matters to avoid unintentional exchanges. A little regular check avoids discovering a torn sleeve when working in pairs.

A bag organized by use

Gather outfit, water, towel and requested equipment; add useful documents only for the event concerned. Prepare the bag before departure and check it after returning. For a child, an illustrated list can make this task progressively independent. The right equipment is the one that makes the actual session easier, not the one that fills the biggest bag.

Check understanding

Is protection enough to make all exercises safe?

See answer

No. The equipment completes the instructions, control and stops; it does not replace them.
