Facilitate course conditions
Schedule, prepared bag and clean clothing provide regular benchmarks. The child can gradually take part in this preparation. Ask the club how information is communicated and when to ask a question. A difficulty known to the teacher can be taken into account more easily than an instruction added from the edge of the room during the exercise.
Be interested in what has been learned
After the lesson, try “what did you discover?” » or “what instructions do you remember following?” ". These questions are about experience rather than immediate comparison with others. The child can show a simple landmark without turning the house into an exam. Technical corrections remain consistent when based on the teacher's instructions.
Put the rank in its place
The rates of progression and the conditions of passage are not identical everywhere. Ask what criteria are worked on at the club. A belt obtained later than a comrade does not, by itself, provide an explanation of effort or skill. After an exam, choose with the child a concrete comment to repeat, leaving room for the pleasure of learning.
Support a competition
Check documents, summons and equipment with the relevant officials. During the event, the roles of coach, organizer and support person remain distinct. After the result, also discuss a positive experience or an instruction followed. A ranking describes participation within a specific framework; it does not constitute a general judgment on the child.
Check understanding
Is ranking or belt color enough to measure all progress?
See answer
No. Understanding, autonomy, control and cooperation offer other benchmarks.
